Sharing the Powers of Design

Book Project

A Peculiar Square

Deliverables

Typographic Design
Book Binding

Objective

The objective of this project was to tell a story with typography in a way that would enhance the meaning of the text with type and shape. Without imagery, this book required a flawless blending of two texts, one by Gui Bonsiepe and the other an author of the designer’s choice, Austin Kleon.

Concept Execution

The project concept was inspired by the thought of creating a peculiar square. How does one challenge the staleness of a precise shape while still honoring it? The book itself is a seven inch square with a underlying grid that builds upon an offset square to hold the primary text. This provides some predictability to the book that is then contradicted by words broken at unusual syllables and the interweaving of varied typeface weights, styles and sizes.

Patterns were also incorporated into the chapter pages in conjunction with descriptors and punches of color. Chapter titles became the patterns, each unique, yet created to be similar. The presumed random numerals are thoughtfully placed to break the words similarly to the treatment in the call-outs throughout the text.

The book was finished by printing onto 32 lb premium paper and hand trimming. It is perfect bound to honor
the original theme of the precise square.
